Ancient Roman Bronze Winged Phallus Tintinnabulum Pendant
The Romans and many peoples of antiquity used an instrumentarium already very rich.
As far as percussion is concerned, some important archaeological discoveries of very well preserved bronze instruments as well as many representations of musicians in action allow us today to better understand their uses.
Among these percussions, if the frame drums with animal skins (tympanum) made of perishable material could not be found during the excavations, conversely, the sistrums (sistrum), bells (tintinnabulum), cymbals (cymbalum) have aroused the emotion of many archaeologists in their discoveries.
In Roman antiquity, a tintinnabulum is an object with bells, and suspended at the entrance of the houses. It most often represents a phallus erect, bronze, sometimes winged, or ithyphallic itself.
This object has nothing sexual, its function is purely apotropaic, that is to say, it protects against bad luck.
