Marcel Vandemeulebroucke - Gypsum ‘Tijl en Nele’
Beautiful gypsum statue of Tijl and Nele, in perfect condition. By the West Flemish artist Marcel Van de Meulebroucke. 1950s. It really looks like wood, even with very convincing wood grains and even drilled woodworm holes (see photos), it looks like it.
Maximum height 33 cm, maximum width 14 cm, maximum depth 9 cm.
This couple (Tijl and Nele) was designed by sculptor Marcel Vandemeulebroucke (Sint-Denijs, 1909 - Kortrijk, 1992) who was ective as a sculptor and renovator. Marcel Vandemeulebroucke was also a student of the famous sculptor Koos van der Kaai. He carved quite a few statues of holy man and folk figures and he worked on the restoration of the city hall of Oudenaarde, the basilica of Tongeren and the Rombouts Tower in Mechelen.
