Fine bronze devs et lvmen aptropomorph aquamanile ewer dated MDLXXV 1575 deus et lumen
Fine Bronze Devs et Lvmen Aquamanile Ewer. Devs et Lvmen, or Deus et Lumen, is Latin for God and Light. Dated MDLXXV or 1575
Bronze, adorned with beard, standing on lion's feet
Dating: about 1900
Height: 20 cm.
Weight about 1 kg
Condition: The oil lamp is in very good condition
A rather bizarre container: it seemed to be a liturgical instrument used by the Catholic priest during services to ritually wash his hands. The cross and the inscription "Deus et lumen" are well engraved on its blanks but why does the head have an infernal side (Luciferian could we say by referring to the "lumen" of the inscription) with these ears pointed, that beard and that horn on the forehead?
It is a molded bronze object, made according to wikipedia in Germany. It bears the date MDLXXV, or 1575, but it is made in the 19th century.
1575: in France, Henry III, still King of Poland, has just been crowned King of France and refuses to punish the authors of St. Bartholomew (1572). 5th War of Religion. In the Holy Empire the situation is hardly more brilliant and in Venice, the plague rages ...
The crudity of "sidelit" puts forward the dark, almost satanic side of this object ...
