Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce - Serpente floor lamp.
The Martinelli Luce Serpente is an undisputed icon in the world of designer lighting. This design was created over 50 years ago and is still admired by enthusiasts of designer lighting. This is more than just a lighting item, it is an artwork in itself. The geometrical shape of the base, arm and shade have a mythical status in the world of design. This iconic Italian design has rightly been included in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Very special, and very much revolutionary in 1965, is the pivoting upper joint of the lamp. This allows the upper arm to rotate 360 degrees, giving the lamp an enormous reach where it stands without having to be moved. Another feature which is at least as interesting is the shaping and technique of the shade which creates a beautiful spread of diffused light.
Elio Martinelli started the Martinelli Luce company in 1950 because he wanted to produce and sell the lamps that he designed himself. The company started as a store in the Italian Lucca, which grew to be a global company.
