This beautiful and rare knife comes from the Dutch soil and dates back to around 1500. The knife is forged from a piece of iron. The handle is partly lined with wood and partly with bronze embellishments. In the middle of the handle are bronze strips with stars and horizontal and vertical lines. At the top of the handle on both sides bronze rectangles have been applied, with inside engravings of the head of a young woman with hood on her head and a dog on the other side. Near the blade a smaller bronze strip with geometric motifs.
These two engraved rectangles at the ends of the handle are very similar to those of a specimen from the Marquardt collection. Attached is a picture of this knife from the book ' Eight Centuries of European Knifes, Forks and Spoons, Klaus Marquardt, Stuttgart 1997. See the detailed pictures of knife no. 48 for this.
In the catalogue description of knife no. 8 Marquardt also refers to an article 48 by J.W. Frederiks about engraved Gothic knife handles. (Frederiks, J.W., Gegraveerde Gotische Mesheften, in: Nerderl. Kunsthist. Jaarboek, Vol. I, 1947.) Frederiks describes the engraver of knife no. 48 as the 'master of the youthful heads', which according to him still works in a fully Gothic style and who, in a remarkable way, achieves his effects with just a few lines. Presumably the engravings in this knife handle are of the same as 'master of the youthful heads'. Compare also the decorated bronze strip in the middle of the handle with the numbers 50, 54 and 55.

This beautiful and rare knife is an archaeological find from the Netherlands and dates around 1500. The iron blade is forged in one piece. The handle of the knife is covered with wood and also some bronze decorations. In the middle of the handle there is a bronze strip applied with horizontal and vertical lines and little stars. On top of the handle one can find two engraved bronze rectangles with the head of a young woman wearing a cap, and a dog on the other side. At the other side of the handle one can find a small bronze strip with geometrical designs.
These two engraved rectangles are very reminiscent of a knife in the Marquardt Collection. Added in the photo section is a page from the book 'Eight Centuries of European Knifes, Forks and Spoons, Klaus Marquardt, Stuttgart 1997. Especially compare the two detailed pictures of knife number 48 with the engraved rectangles of this knife.
In his catalogue description of knife number 48, Marquardt refers to an article of J.W. Frederiks about engraved gothic handles. (Frederiks, J.W., Gegraveerde Gotische Mesheften, in: Nerderl. Kunsthist. Jaarboek, Vol. I, 1947.) Frederiks describes this particular engraver of the bronze decorations as the 'Master of the youth's heads', who according to him still works entirely in the Gothic style and is remarkable for the way he achieves his effects with so few lines. The engravings on this particular knifes are presumably the work of this same Master of the youth's heads. Also compare the bronze strip in the middle of the knife with numbers 50, 54 and 55.
For shipping between EU countries no export permit is required. The seller states that he obtained this lot legally. The seller will inform the buyer if the obtaining of the required permit will take longer then a few days. The parcel wil be sent registered with a track & trace code.
