The original glass of this mirror is a so-called mercury mirror: the glass is covered with tin amalgam as a reflective layer. This method was introduced widely in the 16th century. For about 400 years, mercury mirrors were the main mirrors, despite the difficulty in manufacturing them. The method is to lay a sheet of tin foil on the table and then apply a trellis as a frame. After that you pour mercury on the foil and rub it with a cloth in the tin so that a tin amalgam is formed. After that a layer of mercury is poured on the foil and a clean plate of glass is put on top of that. A wool cloth is used for protection and stones weighs it down. Afterwards the trellis frame is removed so that the excess mercury can flow away. After several days, the glass plate is put on a stand to ‘dry’ further.
